Earlier this month newcomer to Mount Isa Sarah Choyce said she was trying to get parkrun up and running and was realistically hoping to have it in action by winter.
But this week Ms Choyce said they’ve got the go ahead to start it on March 31 – Easter Saturday.
“A huge thank you to Mount Isa City Council and parkrun Australia for their support to make this happen, in what I think, may just be record time,” Ms Choyce said.
Parkruns are free, weekly, 5km timed runs, usually at 7am each Saturday, open to everyone and are safe and easy to take part in.
The Mount Isa route will start and finish at the northern end of Tharrapatha Way. with parking at the corner of Davis Rd and Urquhart St. It will be a two lap course, with the first longer lap going down to Alma St and back, and a shorter second lap with a turnaround near Barkly Highway State School.
People of every ability including walkers are encouraged to take part but they must register beforehand and bring the barcode with them so they can get a time, also barcodes must be printed off as they cannot be downloaded from phones on the day.
Ms Choyce said it was important everyone knows and abides by the parkrun code which includes paying attention to the pre-race brief, keeping under 11s close to guardians, one dog max on a short leash, being mindful of your environment, and thanking the volunteers.
“Prams are welcome, however a parkrunner cannot push a pram and a dog at the same time. It's one or the other,” she said.
“Walkers are most welcome and can walk the entire 5kms if they wish – parkrun is not a race, it is run/jog/walk for everyone, irrespective of age or ability.”

Cloncurry joined the parkrun fun last year and it’s events are still going strong at Mary K park every Saturday morning.
The option to select Mount Isa as a parkrun location will be added to the parkrun Australia website three weeks before the first run on March 31.
