Waking up in the middle of the night to feed her baby – only to discover a mammoth snake sneaking around the house.
North West Star journalist Samantha Walton, currently on maternity leave, was “completely freaked out” when she spotted an 2.5 metre python lurking in her lounge room at about 2am Monday morning.
“I got up to feed Toby, and like always I turned the kitchen light on and sat on the couch in the lounge room to feed him,” Ms Walton said.
“While I was feeding him I saw something move out the corner of my eye.
“At first I thought it was a brown snake and I just froze, I was really anxious” she said.
Thankfully the new mum had brought her mobile phone to the lounge room with her so she could call for help.
“I called my partner and said you need to come down here there is a bloody big snake,” Ms Walton said.
“I was really freaked out because I had walked right past it and not noticed it. I was literally about 50cm from the snake’s head.
“I know it was only a python, but it was still pretty scary. It probably came in through the laundry door and it could have easily gone into Toby’s room,” she said.
Ms Walton, who lives on a station between Mount Isa and Cloncurry, said she will be doing some snake proofing around the house.
“We ended up removing it from the house but It was a minimum of 8ft long,” Ms Walton said.
“It was the second one we saw this week.
“There was another python down at our feed shed as well. I think the rain we have had has stirred them up,” she said.
