Being able to access affordable airfares with planning in advance, as well as when you need to travel last minute is about to become easier for Mount Isa residents.
Regional Express (Rex) announced on January 23 the introduction of a new ‘Rex Community Fare’ scheme for the direct Mount Isa to Cairns route.
The $198 ‘Rex Community Fare’ (Rex Promo) will be made available on up to 30 per cent of seats on every direct flight between Mount Isa and Cairns if booked at least 30 days prior to departure.
Additionally, all unsold seats one day prior to departure will be available at the Rex Community Fare level.
Best yet it is open to anyone – there is no added administration work associated with providing your proof of residence.

Rex’s state manager for Queensland Steve Jones acknowledged that regional communities are more reliant on and exposed to higher transport costs than those living in major cities.
“Rex’s primary mission is to provide safe and reliable air transport at affordable fares to regional Australia; the Rex Community Fare helps to achieve this and will bring significant socio-economic benefits to the residents of the beneficiary communities,” he said.
The initiative has been developed in partnership with Mount Isa Airport with the provision of reduced airport charges for each Community Fare sold through until 30 June 2018.
“Mount Isa Airport, along with our owner operator Queensland Airports Limited, have long supported the calls for reduced airfares in regional Queensland,” Kevin Gill, Mount Isa Airport chief operating officer, said.
“We commend Rex on this initiative and are happy to support for the benefit of the local community.”
Rex will commit to extending the Community Fare between Mount Isa and Cairns into 2019 subject to the continuation of the arrangement with Mount Isa Airport.
The Rex Community Fare Scheme, which was first implemented by Rex in Western Australia on the Albany - Perth and Esperance - Perth routes, has since been introduced in the communities of Broken Hill, Burnie, Moruya and Parkes.
The continued roll-out of the Rex Community Fare Scheme across the Rex network demonstrates the initiative’s success in providing regional and remote communities with more affordable air travel.
The fare is available now under ‘Rex Promo’ at rex.com.au.
