Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Nick Easy said reports indicated a slow-moving Aurizon freight train made contact with the rear of a Pacific National freight train causing one empty wagon of the Pacific National train to derail but remain upright.
“Thankfully, there were no injuries,” Mr Easy said.
All other rail traffic was suspended through this section while initial investigations into the incident got underway.
The owner of the track infrastructure, Queensland Rail, co-ordinated the recovery process.
QR inspected the track for any damage and assisted Aurizon and Pacific National to recover and clear their trains on Wednesday February 28.
The track was inspected and certified fit for service, and rail traffic resumed on the Mount Isa line.
“This incident is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and we are committed to working with the freight operators and the ATSB to determine how this incident occurred and how it can be prevented from happening again in future,” Mr Easy said.
