The helipad was officially open from midday according to North West Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive, Lisa Davies Jones.
“We were pretty excited when the LifeFlight helicopter touched down last night; it was a very proud moment for those who have worked so hard to achieve this,” Ms Davies Jones said.
She paid tribute to the former Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services, Hon Cameron Dick, who made funding available for the patient and staff carparks and the helipad last year.
“Thanks also, to local Member, Robbie Katter, for his work to make this happen,” Ms Davies Jones said.
Mr Katter, State Member for Mount Isa said the new helipad was the culmination of a long journey.
“Previously the helicopter had to land in the touch football field before a new landing was created in the Ian Street car park, and that was too small for the new larger LifeFlight helicopter for the North West.
“Now we have a helipad directly adjacent to the hospital which is a great outcome for patients.”
