A police spokesperson said another person had been taken to hospital.
Police and emergency services are responding to a serious traffic crash on the Barkly Highway approximately 10 km west of Cloncurry.
Preliminary information suggests that around 8.20am, a fuel tanker and vehicle have collided on the highway, resulting in a fire.
The highway is closed in both directions and there are reports of people trapped and vehicles on fire after explosion.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area completely as there are no diversions available in the area.
Paramedics are on the scene.
It is the second major accident on the Barkly Hwy in the lead up to Easter after a fatal motorbike crash near Camooweal.
