Mr Maher said his old room mate in Mount Isa was heavily involved in bikini competitions.
“Obviously being a supportive friend, I was always there and around that atmosphere so as soon as there was a male version of the competition in Mount Isa, I got thrown in the deep end.”
The initially reluctant model won the Mount Isa competition then went on to compete in the Nation competition where he won the encouragement award in 2017.
“After that I thought if I actually apply myself, I could create a platform for myself and become a role model to other Indigenous young men out there.”
Mr Maher said he chased his dreams and he wants others to know they can do it too.
The world final competition will be held on Gold Coast from Monday November 26 to Sunday December 2.
