Senior Sergeant Renee Hanrahan said drink driving remains a major contributing factor to fatalities and injuries on Australian roads.
“Even though an illegal BAC limit has been in place for over 25 years,” she said.
Police are urging all drivers to always consider not only their safety, but the safety of all road users.
“If you plan to drink, plan ahead,” Senior Sergeant Hanrahan said.
“Don’t wait until you’re intoxicated to decide how to get home.”
If people do drink, police advise them to organise a driver who will not be drinking or taking drugs, make alternative transport plans, stay overnight, use public transport or a taxi.
