Johnathan Thurston has often been the man of the moment, and in early July he was a winner again, taking out Burke Shire’s Order of the Outback award. Although JT was unable to attend at Burketown he relayed a video speech to thank all the voters and the people who nominated him. Burke Shire Council present the award to individuals or organisations that enrich the lives of people in the Outback.

Mount Isa motor sports enthusiasts flocked to Malouf Auto in July to meet V8 Supercar champion driver Dave Reynolds. Reynolds was there alongside his Erebus Motorsport Holden ZB and posed for photos with the three trophies his team won in Darwin as well as the Bathurst Peter Brock Trophy Reynolds took out in 2017 with co-driver Luke Youlden.
At the start of the month fans flocked to the Mount Isa Campdraft as well as competitors from NSW, Victoria and all over Queensland.
About 1500 racegoers – many en route from the Big Red Bash a few days earlier – took every vantage point at Bedourie Camel Races. Trainer Rod Samson’s Uncle Bob stormed well clear to claim the Cup from Which Way and Chief and claim the first leg of the double with the Boulia Cup.

At the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge local competitor Sharon Russell took out the AJ McDonald Memorial Encouragement Challenge with a 301.5 on Coota. She also won the Rising Star Award.
John Doody won the 2018 Outback to the Stack. He ran the 21km in an impressive 1.26.49. Kim Alcorn took out first place for the female half marathon at 1.44.14.

Mount Isa got a new world champion in July thanks to Sikaran Martial Arts Mount Isa. The club’s Zane Street won a gold medal in the World Eskrima-Kali-Arnis Federation’s world championships in Hawaii.
In August Cloncurry lit up for the Curry Merry Muster. The Saddle Bronc title went to Clayton Braden while the Open Bull Ride was tied between Sonny Schafferius and Malcolm Woodard.
A week later all roads led to Buchanan Park for the 60th Mount Isa Mines Rotary rodeo and the last to carry the Rotary name in the title. Roy Dunn picked up his second Isa open bull ride win with a superb ride in the final round on Sunday. Dunn won the event in 2014 following in his uncle Troy Dunn 23 years earlier and the Sarina cowboy rode his way to a flawless 84 points final ride.
