Barry Byrne will urge councillors at the Mount Isa City Council meeting next week to consider building a bypass.
Mr Byrne said the cattle road train accident could have been much worse, considering many road trains carry dangerous and flammable goods through the CBD.
Mr Byrne said he did not believe a bypass would discourage travellers from spending money in Mount Isa.
Many tourists and visitors will still visit Mount Isa because it is a major central hub in the region, he said.
Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady said the bypass was a Department of Transport and Main Roads issue.
However, a feasibility study estimated the bypass to cost millions of dollars when the bypass was previously debated.
