Among the shoppers was teacher, Debbie Bayliss, who said there was a bit of a scrimmage to be the first in the doors.
"Some people were determined to be the first in, and there were a few heels scraped with trolleys, but everyone was pretty well behaved," Ms Bayliss said.
She stocked up on laundry powder, energy saving light bulbs, tinned food, baby products for her daughter who was expecting a baby, and ground coffee.
"I paid $140 for at least $700 worth of goods," she said.
Other customers got stuck into the ice cream and frozen goods, soft drinks, and pet food.
The IGA's retail business manager, Tony Lenz said everything went for $1 an item on Saturday and everything was sold.
"We started pulling down the fittings and closed the doors at 2.30pm."
Social media helped to spread the word about the $1 sale, he said, as it was a last minute decision.
"We posted it on social media and we were pleased word got around."
Mr Lenz said he would be going back to Townsville next week where he had a job waiting.
"There is no displacement for IGA staff," he said, meaning all staff had found other employment.
