Club coordinator, Lem Alderton, said they held an open day last Sunday.
“This allowed community members to have a look at our new complex and meet the trainers,” Alderton said.
“The gym was packed with about 40 people in attendance and 36 people registered for interest updates on the day.
“When we start at the end of January we will have three trainers teaching four classes and each class will have two training sessions a week.”
Alderton said they found a need for a smaller boxing facility in town.
There are other facilities in town that also have boxing classes but they have a lot of people who go there.
This is a chance for interested individuals to have a go while having a supportive team around them.

“So we are trying to start something a little bit smaller and focus on specifically boxing, as opposed to a broad range of thing, like the other facilities do.
“We started this place up to focus on the technique of boxing.
“We found there are a lot of talented kids that come through and unfortunately in bigger boxing complexes they don’t get the attention they need.”
Eventually as more people join the club there is potential for variation classes with a more experience class and a less experience class.
“We have a few who are reasonably experienced but the vast majority have no experience,” Alderton said.
“We want to keep everyone who is learning together, so they can develop together and keep the people with experience together so they can keep progressing and not get bored.
“A club with smaller classes like this gives people, who have always thought about giving this sport a go, an opportunity.”
Alderton said there was huge technicality in boxing and all members would learn stance and footwork, straight punches, curved punches, basic defense, punch combinations, counter punching, advanced skills and sparring.
“The biggest thing with beginners is they are worried about being embarrassed, which is something we try to avoid. We will not make someone do something that they are not comfortable with.
“This is a chance for interested individuals to have a go while having a supportive team around them.”
Eventually the club hope to take a group of boxers to the east coast to represent Mount Isa at competitions.
Classes start on January 27. For anyone over the age of 12, it is $80 a month and below is $60.
