Mr Mehan started on January 18 and he said he was very pleased to return to the North West to take up the interim while the permanent role was recruited.
“During my first week in the role, I have met with the Board, the Executive and staff both in Mount Isa and in the regional facilities,” Mr Mehan said.
“I recall the commitment and problem-solving attitude from the North West staff to meet the challenges of delivering healthcare in a remote setting. I can see the same attitude has continued.”
Between 1999 and 2006 Mr Mehan was the Northern Zonal manager for Queensland Health, which included the former Mount Isa Health District.
“I travelled regularly to the North West and remember the major challenge at that time was to attract clinicians to the area,” he said.
“I am pleased to see that the North West HHS is attracting clinicians and emerging clinicians for the future, as evidenced by the five rural-generalist interns who have recently started and the nurse graduates who will join us soon.”
North West Hospital and Health Board Chair Paul Woodhouse said Acting Health Minister Dr Anthony Lynham approved Mr Mehan’s temporary appointment on the recommendation of the health and hospital board.
Mr Woodhouse said he was delighted to welcome Mr Mehan, who was a highly experienced senior executive with a career of more than 30 years in the health sector.
“Mr Mehan has taken up the temporary appointment while the recruitment of a permanent chief executive is progressed,’’ Mr Woodhouse said.

Mr Mehan had also served time as a Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health.
Former North West HHS Chief Executive Mrs Sue Belsham retired at the end of 2015 and several members of the executive team have been relieving in the lead role for short periods since.
