They have been the best team in the Bell & Moir Toyota Mount Isa T40 cricket comp  all season and on Saturday Black Stars proved it by winning the premiership.

It was a low scoring but always tense affair as Townview stepped up to the mark in the grand final.

They surprised Black Stars to win last year but their hopes of back-to-back titles suffered when batting first they were skittled for 75 on what proved to be a bowler’s pitch at Sunset Oval.

Several of the batsmen made starts wickets fell regularly as the bowlers were on top.

Moes was the top scorer with 21 and Coetzee made 14.

Conlan did the damage on the top order finishing with 2-14.

Then skipper Lawrenson took over to demolish the lower order finishing with incredible figures of 4-5.

Magnus 2-24 and McGill 2-21 both chipped in too in a terrific performance by Black Stars’ attack.

Townview bowlers didn’t have much to defend but they kept it tight and took regular wickets to keep the contest open until the final overs.

Clint Heuir in particular was dangerous dismissing opener Cameron for a duck and finishing with 3-25.

Slow bowler Knight chipped in with 2-23.

But Ash Benson made a solid 19no and Stewart made 18 as they steadily knocked off the runs in just 19 overs.

Black Stars eventually won by five wickets.

Accepting the premiership shield Black Stars’ skipper Lawrenson praised Townview for their persistence over the season.

“There always has to be a second, we got it last year,” Lawrenson said.

“But four other clubs would have liked to have been here so congratulations on a successful season.”

Lawrenson said it was good to see some younger players come through but the core of Black Stars team is their experience.

“We did a quick head count a while ago and ten of our team is over 40 years old,” he said.

“It’s a great effort to keep turning up, it’s about having patience and playing the whole game.

“The cool heads prevailed. I’d like to see you all back again next season.”
