Racing action hastily switched to Mount Isa on Sunday after the last minute cancellation of Saturday’s racing in Maxwelton.
Queensland Racing said Mount Isa was the closest track that could the event at a day’s notice as the fallout continues from Saturday’s cancellation.
Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said stewards told Racing Queensland the Maxwelton track surface was unsafe for racing after two inspections in the week leading up to the races.
“QRIC Stewards inspected the track for a third time on Friday, March 31 when it was determined that the race meeting was highly unlikely to go ahead the next day due to the state of the track,” Mr Barnett said.
“After a final inspection on Saturday the Maxwelton meeting was cancelled due to safety concerns for animals and participants.”
However Maxwelton committee member and track preparer David Carter said the track was arguably the best in the north west.
This should be an alarm to all clubs with black soil tracksDavid Carter
“This sorry saga should be an alarm to all clubs with black soil tracks if stewards are consistent with their track assessments,” he said.
