Riders from Cairns, Townsville, Atherton and Burdekin bolstered the numbers during the two day carnival.
The Island BMX Club’s president Anthony Leonard said the Easter Carnival was able to attract competitors from the coast, where they were used to competing at many tracks in a shorter distance.
The competition numbers were a “fair size” for a BMX competition in Mount Isa. Regular race meetings at the club attracted numbers between 30 to 50 riders, Leonard said.
The competition was a points round for the zone racing so it gave local racers the chance to increase their points for the season. It’s the second year in a row that the club has secured approval to hold the event across Easter.
The winner of the superclass 14 plus men’s was Wade Mundie, who bested Island’s Shannon Murphy, who came second. Mundie rides for the Cairns BMX Club and has been competing for about a decade.
Mundie said it had been close racing against his competitors all weekend until the final. He had won all races except one in which he placed fifth. “Obviously the track was a bit different, I had to get used to the track,” Mundie said.
“The start is not as tall as our own track, and the corners (are different). That’s about it.”
Mundie’s next ride will be in the BMXA National Championships to be held in Brisbane from April 24, to April, 30. Mount Isa’s Philip Woodward, who placed eighth in the superclass, will also compete along with his brother Bill.
A Cairns based rider was also the winner of the 14 plus women’s superclass. Ammie De Lai led on the track in all her races with seven points. In second place was Island’s Emma Allgood, 14 points, who intends on entering nationals.

The 8 girls was between Island’s Mollie Leonard and Atherton’s Kirra Twidale. But Leonard’s knowledge of the track undoubtedly contributed to her series of straight wins, resulting in 7 points.
