The club’s coach David Scott said the rain and development of a bore in recent years had improved the quality of the oval following drought and water restrictions. “It still hasn’t quite settled yet but it’s definitely getting there. It was quite dry for a few years.”
The quality of the oval affected the safety as well as running times for runners. “When the ground is nice and firm underfoot it tends to be quicker for an athlete,” Scott said.
The committee hoped to have the regular number of 150 members.
“Kids definitely want to run so for a sport that involves a lot of running, it’s a popular sport,” he said. Numbers typically increased as the school carnival season started.
11-year-old athlete Kadea O’Donnell said she loved the hurdling and long distance events the most.
“It’s just fun to get out there and have a go,” she said.
