Major Jeremy Barraclough of the 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment said the idea for the boot camp came about from a discussion with Constable Bianca Carlos from PCYC Project Booyah.
“She’s a great leader in the community here, because she’s getting these young men and giving those life skills that they need,” Major Barraclough said.
Major Barraclough said it is similar to the regular training for soldiers.
“We train soldiers in those skills they need to be resilient, to be strong leaders, and to be good people within the community,” he said.
Five young men engaged in a series of ‘lighthearted’ army drills and games before a workout and obstacle course in the army grounds.
Project Booyah’s Alana Page said it was especially helpful in their training for Certificate 1 in sports and recreation through TAFE, with seven boys enrolled.
