Tina Butcher, an educator at the Positive Learning Unit and keen potter herself, said the children loved getting their hands on clay and learning about the pottery making process.

Arts on Alma have been exhibiting the students’ art for two weeks, finishing this weekend.

The pieces will then be collected to keep, use, and enjoy at home.

Nine-year-old student Reuben McDonald said they were each given a piece of clay the size of their hand, and “after a you could shape it”.

The students learnt each part of the process, from moulding to drying, sanding, firing and glazing.

“After it dries you dip the bottom in bees wax, so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the kiln,” Reuben said.

Alongside the pottery, the exhibition includes Indigenous artefacts such as a water bag made from the water tight hide of a male kangaroo.
