“It’s been an action packed two week of sport,” Mr Farrell said.
“Last weekend I travelled out with official ambassador Jon Sieben and Jon has inspired a lot of athletes to want to follow in his footsteps and win gold in the Olympics.”
Mr Farrell said however the Games were more than just about winning.
“The Games bring together the communities of the north western Queensland region encouraging participation through sport and getting active, building friendships and creating long-lasting memories.”
Mr Farrell said participants travelled 1100km to take part in the judo competition while senior pistol shooters came from Brisbane to participate.
“We had our very first Cross Fit competition on record while the oldest athlete, 79 years, competed in the trail run receiving a bronze medal,” he said.
Mount Isa City Council organiser Cr Peta Macrae it has been a busy couple of weekends.
“It’s been fantastic to see people out and about either as a competitor, organiser, official or spectator,” Cr Macrae said.
“We had such a wide range of ages participating from judo and hockey with the littlies right up to retired citizens at the lawn bowls and the pistol shooting.”
Cr Macrae said that was what sport was all about.
“It’s about bringing people together, different ages, social backgrounds, cultural differences and having them find something in comon and get out being active,” she said.
There were 32 sports represented at the 2017 Great Western Games held across six towns from Charters Towers in the east to Mount Isa in the west.
Cairns councillor and chair of the North Queensland Sports Foundation Jessie Richardson thanked Glencore and Mount Isa City Council for their support.
“We look forward to working in partnership with you again back in 2019,” Cr Richardson said.
Six more sports will take place across the region in the coming weeks.
