The NBN will initially go to 3300 homes and businesses in Mount Isa, including Happy Valley, Mica Creek, Parkside, Healy, Mornington, The Gap and Townview. A further 5400 areas across Menzies, Mica Creek, Miles End, Mount Isa City, Soldiers Hill, Winston, Fisher, Sunset and Pioneer go live in the coming months.
Telstra Area General Manager Rachel Cliffe said Telstra customers on the NBN were enjoying faster speeds and doing more online with less buffering.
“The arrival of superfast broadband is great news for the Mount Isa community and helps to keep locals at the forefront of technology in Australia,” Ms Cliffe said.
“The NBN will open up new possibilities including home automation, faster streaming - with less buffering - and new advancements in smart home.”
Ms Cliffe said the arrival of the NBN in Mount Isa was set to accelerate the take up of locals using connected devices to help turn their households into smart homes.
“The average Australian household has 14 connected devices including things like smartphones and tablets, as well as smart lights and home monitoring systems. By 2021, as smart devices become more common, this will grow to over 30,” she said. “While many people still think of smart homes as futuristic, they’re here right now and are helping locals make their day-to-day lives a little easier. With Telstra Smart Home, locals can check they’ve turned off the iron from their smartphone, get notified with a photo when the kids get home from school, or check in on the dog while they’re at work.
