Hosting the event this year in conjunction with the Rodeo Services Australia finals is Mount Isa Rodeo Series.
Mount Isa Rodeo Series secretary, Kyam Gillett, said their organisation accepted the event after being approached by Mount Isa City Council.
“We had planned to run our finals in November, but after being approached by council we took on the date claimer for New Year’s Eve,” Ms Gillett said.
“We are expecting to draw competitors from all parts of north west and central west Queensland, as we host the double point finals for Rodeo Services Australia.”
Ms Gillett said despite the event being held outside of the north west rodeo season, competitors were still active and keen to participate in the event.
“Usually after the pro rodeos finish in August, competitors tend to wind down their season and it gets a bit hot. The New Year’s Eve Rodeo just gives competitors another opportunity to compete,” she said.
The New Year’s Eve Rodeo program lists 12 open and four junior categories consisting of both timed and rough stock events.
Ms Gillett said nominations looked promising for a competitive night of rodeo action.
“Our timed events are almost full and we have about half a dozen in the rough stock events.
“We are expecting these nomination numbers to grow up until the cut off date of December 22.”
Stock contractors for the event include: Marcus and Shelley Curr, Jamie and Helen Hacon, Hvpower, Grant and Anita Telford, Ian and Karla Remfrey, Colin and Kylee Ferguson and Scott Braes.
Gates will open at Buchanan Park on Saturday December 31 at 5pm with the rodeo starting at 6pm. Gate admission is $20 for adults and children free.
