Lorene Chandler from the LBN told a council meeting on Tuesday they were partnership with a company called Why Leave Town from Narrabri, NSW, to encourage more people to shop locally.
The idea is that people can buy a gift card in one of 10 “loading” stores and the money on the card can only be spent in any Cloncurry business that participates in the program.
Ms Chandler said all a business needed was an Eftpos machine to participate in the program though there would be a small administration charge to get involved.
As little as $1 to as much as $1000 can be loaded onto a single gift card. The cards are single load only which means that additional amounts can not be loaded onto the card after the initial purchase.
““The beauty of it is that all the money stays in town,” she said.
Ms Chandler told Council the set up cost for the campaign was $5000 with an annual cost of $2000.
Council approved the LBN to spend the $5000 to set the scheme up.
Ms Chandler said it would take about nine weeks from acceptance to set it up.
The Local Business Network and Cloncurry Shire Council are also welcoming new residents to Cloncurry in 2018 with a welcome pack.
The welcome pack promotes businesses and services in Cloncurry. The pack also includes get ready items to prepare in case of a disaster.
