Hundreds of people flocked through the doors of the Mount Isa Civic Centre for this year’s Expo, rebadged from the Super Sports Expo of previous years, and moved to Saturday lunchtime, but no less successful for that.
Sports and recreation Councillor Peta MacRae said the Sign On Expo was a great opportunity to explore the many options available to get active, have fun and make new friends and she was delighted with the turnout.
“I’m really happy with the crowd here today, I think the new timeslot has suited a lot of people, they can get their chores done, shopping, then call in, grab some lunch, have a look around and sign their kids up for lots of things at the same time,” Cr MacRae said.
“And hopefully they find something for themselves to do.”
Cr MacRae said every stall was busy with people seeking information.
“For me, it looks like there is lots of good activity happening.”
There were a wide range of well over 40 sporting and community groups there from soccer to rowing, from needlecraft to Apex, from basketball to athletics with groups spilling out into the foyer and hockey demonstrations out on the lawn.
Groups like Mount Isa School of Dance also strutted their stuff on the stage.
Also there were the CPR Group gathering information for Mount Isa City Council’s new Sport and Recreation Strategy.
Cr MacRae said they were consultants Council had engaged to work with local sporting groups to understand their needs and to identify barriers preventing people from participating in sport and physical activity.
“This is an important document that will guide us over the next 10 years helping determine where best to invest time and resources in relation to sport and recreation programs, services and facilities,” Cr McCrae
Melissa Driscoll from the CPR Group said they were encouraging sporting groups to meet them.
She said they were also running the 2018 Committee Coaching Seminar Series hosted by North West Queensland Soccer Zone but open to all sporting groups.
