When local miner, Daniel Bird and his brother get together anything can happen even breaking world records.
Daniel Bird aka Thunder Dan said his brother and himself loved to joke around.
“He rang me and said so do you want to break a world record or what, I said yeah righto,” Mr Bird said.
“I didn’t think he was serious at first then it just kind of snowballed from there.”
And because Dan likes driving, the idea soon grew to beat the roundabout world record.
The world record for driving around a roundabout was three hours and 34 minutes and was held by a 64 year old software designer in Indiana in 2015.
Mr Bird broke the record on Saturday, February 10, when he drove around the Uni roundabout in Townsville for 4 hours.
The roundabout was 220 metres in circumference which roughly equates to 500 laps or nearly 110 km of driving.
“It's been so much fun, it really has, and now I’m a world record holder,” he said.
Mr Bird choose to support Men’s Shed, an organisation that not only is skilled at making men’s stuff but also address health concerns particular to males.
Support from the community and local businesses helped organise the event.
“I've had heaps of support. A few local business, especially BuddyBuy, got behind me,” Mr Bird said.
“I've been pretty overwhelmed with it all actually, there was a lot of work that went on behind the scenes to get this organised, and they did the bulk of the work, it's been an amazing experience.
“I think a lot of people know how important the Men’s Shed is to our community, so they were happy to donate, however, we haven’t quite reached our target of $2000 yet,” he said.
The GoFundMe page is still running and you can message BuddyBuy NQ on Facebook if you wish to donate cash or are a business.”
Mr Bird said he was keen to go for another world record attempt in the future.
“I feel like I have a few more records in me for sure.”
“My brother and I are already talking about working on something else for the future but we are open to suggestions as well.
“You haven’t seen the last of Thunder Dan!”
