A BoM spokesperson said the low which has been lashing Townsville with rain will drift toward Mount Isa this weekend bringing heavy rainfall and storms.
“It will end up in the Gulf of Carpentaria where it may sit and intensify,” the spokesperson said.
“The North West is in for a soggy weekend.”
The channel country will also receive much needed rain as the low moves west channeling the moisture.
The BoM said there could be falls of between 100-500mm in parts of the North West and Gulf country which could amount to flooding.
Mount Isa’s average annual rainfall is 464.4mm.
Mount Isa’s highest daily rainfall total is 213mm in 2004 and the highest monthly total 539mm in 2009.
Boulia has already suffered some of the effects.
The BoM said 55mm fell in Boulia last night while Mount Isa copped 25mm.
Boulia Shire Council confirmed a freak storm hit the town around 7pm Thursday night.
Council CEO, Lynn Moore said it was fast and furious and left trees uprooted.
“The school was worse hit with the shade structure up-ending and a lot of trees pulled out from the roots,” Ms Moore said.
“Friday was set to be Clean Up Australia Day however we bought it in a day early and the community pulled together this morning to clean up.
“There was the council crew, the work camp, parents, teachers and students all helping with the clean up.”
Julie Woodhouse who lives four kilometres away said it was like a mini tornado.
“I live near the racecourse and we didn’t get anything here,” Ms Woodhouse said.
