Coordinator and participate Scott Jones said we had a great turnout for the event.
“A total of 12 competitors which is great for our first 3-lift event,” Mr Jones said.
“There was plenty of encouragement from the spectators and lots of heavy lifting from the competitors.”
The overall winner in the women's division was Melanie West who was predicted to break the gym record on the deadlift event of 130kg.
Ms West lifted a huge 145kg blowing the record out of the water.
Ms West is a police officer and it was her first time in this competition.
“I’ve actually been training for a body sculpting event in Toowoomba so I’ve been eating a lot of food to keep my strength up and I feel really good, I’m excited,” Ms West said.
William Harvey took out the lightweight division and was announced the overall winner for the men’s division, with only 2.73 points ahead of the next competitor.
“The competition was close,” Mr Jones said.
One of the oldest competitors was Peter Langdon who came back out of retirement and competed.
Mr Langdon said he was glad the strength sports were making a comeback.
“I competed over 20 years ago when powerlifting was in its peak in Mount Isa.
“It’s making a comeback, there’s been a lot of interest and it’s a supportive atmosphere as well.
“Ladies are coming into it now too and us old guys try to keep the younger guys honest,” he said.
