The $500,000 stack refurbishment works will allow repairs to be made to the asset’s internal brick lining and concrete casing. The black top of the stack will also be repainted.
The Copper Smelter stack was built in 1959 and towers at 155 meters tall.
The Mount Isa Copper Smelter rebrick commenced on Wednesday, March 14 and will take about a month to complete.
The project has drawn in more than 500 additional local and regional contractors and specialist workers to support the Copper Smelter’s regular workforce.
The Mount Isa Copper Smelter is one of just a handful of advanced minerals processing facilities left in Australia.
It produces copper anode from material sourced from Glencore’s Mount Isa and Ernest Henry Mining operations, as well as concentrate from other operators in the region through third party processing agreements.
