That is why a dedicated court will be established to deal specifically with domestic and family violence.
The new court will be launched within a year.
The Queensland Government has funded extra prosecutors, magistrates, court staff and support services in Mount Isa, Palm Island, Townsville, Southport and Beenleigh.
A report released on Wednesday revealed why these locations were chosen.
“The courts with the highest volume of Domestic and Family Violence matters and identifying those courts that deal with our most disadvantaged Queenslanders,” the report said.
The report also shed light on just how rampant family violence is in Mount Isa.
On average, five child protection applications are made to the Mount Isa Magistrates Court each week.
And every week, about 24 people make a domestic violence protection.
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention minister Di Farmer said more people are reporting domestic violence because we have brought the issue out of the shadows.
“Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of their age, gender, wealth, where they live or cultural background, and this is true of regional and rural areas in Queensland, including Mount Isa,” Ms Farmer said.
“We established a Mount Isa Domestic Violence High Risk team last year, bringing together police, child safety staff, housing and health staff along with non-government agencies as part of a $2.2m three year trial,” she said.
The team work together to share information on at-risk victims so the right service can intervene more quickly and reduce danger.
