HAPPY HOURS: The Sexual Health Clinic staff were excited about their new premises on the Barkly Highway.

Following the successful relocation of Mount Isa Sexual Health (MISH) to 1 Barkly Highway, opposite Splashez pool, the clinic is planning on offering extended opening hours on Mondays, according to Clinical Nurse Consultant, Mark Hanlon.

“We’re planning to stay open on Mondays from 8am until 7pm, to see if that enables more clients to access our services,” Mr Hanlon said.

“We do get requests from clients for an after-hours service, and we will treat this after-hours clinic as a “Quick Check Clinic” – so people can come in for an STI screen. We’ll take their bloods and they can give a urine sample and be out of there in 20 minutes.”

Mr Hanlon said STI checks should be part of people’s normal health routine.

The Quick Check Clinic will be a nurse-led initiative, so there will no scripts available, and people will have to book an appointment for the after-hours clinic.

Mr Hanlon said the service would, as with all Sexual Health services, be free and confidential.

“STIs are on the increase, so it’s important to get tested even if people don’t have any signs or symptoms – and with an STI like chlamydia, up to 75% of people won’t know they have it.

“There are risks for fertility with STIs for both men and women, however most infections are easily treated and curable so if people think they have something wrong, it’s important to come in and see the staff at Sexual Health.”

Sexual Health offers a range of services including STI Check-ups and treatment, Women’s Health Checks, Needle and Syringe Program, HIV and Hepatitis management, LGBTQI support, and education  and information about sexual health
