“While the State government is touting this as a boon for Queenslanders the reality is people living in rural Queensland won’t even notice the increase,’’ Mr Katter said.

“Only one per cent of the new positions were based in rural Queensland.

The Government also failed to mention that rural Queenslanders are footing the bill for these public servant jobs, through royalties and taxes that aren’t being returned to the regions.

“I think most people would feel it would only be fair if rural Queenslanders shared in some of the flow-on economic benefits of the new jobs.

“And I think that most people would raise their eyebrows when they find out how lopsided the benefits have been.’’

From 2015 to 2017 the Queensland Government hired 22,103 new public servants according to the recently released Quarterly Workforce Profile.

Of these full-time equivalent positions 18,158 (82.15 per cent) were in South East Queensland. The bush, which makes up about two thirds of the state of Queensland, received 233 jobs.

“From this enormous pool of public servants just one per cent made it to rural Queensland,’’ Mr Katter said.

“It is misleading to spruik that all Queenslanders are benefiting from this jump in public servant numbers.

The facts are Brisbane has benefited while the bush has been ignored once again.

“It is another example of recurring, city-centric policy focus of the Labor Government. “A lack of access to public services, destructive vegetation management laws and poor infrastructure funding are all indicative of a bigger problem regional Queenslanders have to deal with - broad policy neglect.

“According to the 2017-18 State Budget the public service wage bill is over $22 billion per annum, which is around 40 per cent of total government sector budget expenditure.

A majority of this is being spent in the South East which means the rest of the state is missing out.”
