Intruder is a suspense crime thriller set in the suburbs of Melbourne and has you analysing both the abused and the abuser and how they deal with manipulation and emotional hurt.
Her portrayal of love, sex and abuse is very intimate, brutal and compelling.
“My style of writing is extremely descriptive making you jump right into each scene,” Ms Johnson said.
Ms Johnson started her writing career with short stories and poems about life but her progression into writing novels was sparked by bold dreams.
Emily is a housewife whose everyday life is turned on its head after an unexpected encounter with an intruder. She unintentionally finds herself thrust into the limelight as a resilient and powerful role model for abuse victims while she attempts to reclaim her life.
- Author Leonie Johnson
“Over eight years ago I awoke from an amazing dream that kept playing in my subconscious over and over and I thought ‘wow this would make a great movie’.”
“When I finally woke in the morning, I jotted down about 25 one-liners and they became my brief description for each chapter.
It wasn't until three years later after having a mid-life crisis that Ms Johnson decided to stop work and pursue her creative dream of writing a novel.
“I gave myself three years to write this novel but at the end of two years I had only written 80 pages and was procrastinating so after much ado my husband and I decided to drive around Australia in our classic sports car.”
The last third of Ms Johnsons novel was written in Camooweal.
“We broke down in Camooweal and had to wait for Australia Post to deliver parts so in that two week period I got to work and finished my novel.
“A publisher picked me up straight away and then it took about two years to go through the editing and publishing stage.
“Essentially my novel is about a house wife called Emily whose everyday life is turned on its head after an unexpected encounter with an intruder. She unintentionally finds herself thrust into the limelight as a resilient and powerful role model for abuse victims while she attempts to reclaim her life,” Ms Johnson said.
“Females can overcome great odds and there are females in these situations.”
