The NWCC of Mount Isa has conducted the canoe marathon on the Gregory River for over 40 years.
Roads and tracks to the river have been graded and the water is running clear.
Alison Whitehead from North West Canoe Club said the river was at normal height with a flow rate of less than 4 cumes, in other words perfect for all abilities.
Currently there are 135 people registered for the canoe race, however last minute registration prior to the event is available at the racecourse between 11am-1.30pm on Saturday.
Local legendary paddler, Steve Jenji, has raced the river for about 25 years and will again do battle this year.
“Allan Cross came in second last year and he was only a newcomer. So it looks like it will be battle on between those two,” Ms Whitehead said.
The Canadian Challenge promises to be as entertaining and fashionable as ever.
“The first and second place getters from last year have changed their team names but we have no doubt that the sabotaging and heckling will continue,” Ms Whitehead said.
The Challenge has a huge seven teams registered with four participants in each canoe.
“It’s going to be a titan battle down the Gregory, with all seven teams out to win part of the $1900 total prize money.
“Figurehead Racing will be out to beat The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turdholes again this year.
The Turdholes are known for their antics and are on the rebound of malicious sabotaging of their toilet last year by the Figurehead Racing team.
Team Cobra will be one to watch as these enthusiasts have trained and raced the river for many years.
Mak Diesel a major sponsor of the event has two teams attempting the rigorous river called Mak 1 and Mak 2.
Team Paddlepus are back for another go after last years hazardous ride down the river and The Pink Ponies are also hot contenders.
This is one weekend not to miss with loads of fun to be had by young and old alike.
