The club has had about 100 athletes attending each of its first few club days to begin the season, with athletes ranging in age from the four-year-old ‘Minions’ right through to two new 60 year plus masters.
The minions group has quadrupled in size this year and the rowdy mob seem to be having a ball thanks to the even more rowdy committee member Simona Reynolds who has been showing them the ropes throughout the first two club days.
Sadly Simona, partner James Stewart and family are moving back to Townsville in the next few weeks leaving a gaping hole in the club.
Breanna ‘Cannon’ Waerea continues to dominate in the throws. The now 16-year-old has already taken down two of Erin Faithful’s 16 year records adding a half metre to the old discus record throwing 29.52m and adding an unheard of 68cm to the shot put record with the new mark now standing at 11.45m.
Jade Scott had a season debut height in high jump of 1.41m giving her the under 18 women’s club record. Mitchell Hujanen smashed his own under 20 Hammer record throwing 45.81m and new master Peter Baxter has already bagged three records in the 60-64yrs Long Jump – 3.05m, Shot Put - 8.23m and Hammer – 21.74m.
Apart from a few teething problems the new photo finish equipment is working well and with practice, the process is expected to speed up.
Very soon the images and results will be available for purchase with funds helping to pay for printing and equipment costs.
The first two ‘Mighty Minion’ awards for the season go to Bethany Green for ‘Giving it a go’ and Nate Seymour for ‘His Super Effort’
Even though the season is still in its early stages legend certificates are already starting to accumulate with 20 to be awarded from the first two club days.
Awardees are Rylie Hanson, Rico Waerea, Kadea O’Donnell, Cooper Hanson, Marley Miko, Seinna TeWani, Tia Peel, Sienna Hilton and Scarlett Venz. All of these athletes have successfully passed the pre-determined levels set out by the club which on average puts them in the top 20 percent of athletes from two clubs over 16 plus years.
There will be a large number of committee members and volunteers away for this weekend’s meet and the remaining are putting a call out for extra assistance with set-up and running of events especially being that this week will be the first hurdle day of the year.
Athletics will continue on Saturday afternoons starting at 2pm at Sunset Oval. Registrations will be taken all season and the club offers two free trial days before fees are due.
