Galea Warrior’s dominating win in the Battle of the Bush Qualifier (1100m) means Burow has to book holidays so he can be at Doomben for the inaugural Battle of the Bush final.
Wife Marianne will be looking for a new outfit to cheer on Galea Warrior when he bids for the $100,000 prizemoney on Tattersall’s Tierra Day.
Jockey Shane McGovern admitted it was easy to win when you had a good horse under you and Galea Warrior was as easy a two length winner as you will ever see.
Damgoodchoice was a good second and the consistent Eldrick finished a length and a half third.
McGovern had to work a bit harder in the final race to win the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1,200m) on the outsider Our Hussler. The two and a half length win gave trainer Justin Bawden a treble and completed a day of upsets with Tuning a long neck second in front of Code One.
Bawden’s other wins were with favourite Al Mah Rocket and rank outsider Watto’s Jet.
Eynhallow tried to run the field off their feet in the Maiden Plate (1,000m) but Jason Babarovich positioned Al Mah Rocket perfectly and he pounced just before the straight to win by five and a half lengths.
The effort told on Eynhallow who looked like she was treading water while Leapin’ Lena caught a tidal wave to swamp her on the line and take second place by a head.
Bawden and Babarovich also combined to start the day when Watto’s Jet jumped to the lead and controlled the tempo to claim an all the way win in the Benchmark 50 Handicap. Favourite The Kings Magic was forced to race wide as Wicked Investment made it a three way go down the back straight.
Hugging the rails Watto’s Jet swung into the straight two lengths clear and though The King’s Magic wound up he finished half a head short. The outsider of the field Babaovich had a perfect ride on Watto’s Jet with Admiral Ruff a further length and three quarters third.
It was a day for doubles with Keith Ballard joining Babarovich and McGovern. His first was on the veteran Diurnal Tiger who notched his fifteenth win in one hundred and fifteenth starts. Rather than drift off to the long yard quietly the old stager bolted to a nine and a half length win in the Benchmark 65 Handicap (1,450m).
The favourites folded like a blanket in a laundry with Your Way Or Mine four and a half lengths third behind the longshot in the field Admiral Ruff.
It wasn’t until the fourth race the favourite’s came out to play when in the Class Two Plate (1000m) Keith Ballard piloted Damian Finter’s Crack A Coldie to a thrilling three and a quarter length win.
Hot favourite Target Strike gave his all but couldn’t gain on the leader and give jockey/trainer combo Jay Morris and Tamara Tincknell another reason to celebrate following their Friday night engagement.
Sirtime was in the fight for a long time but faded at the death to finish one and three quarter length third.
