The Dajarra Rhinos laced up for their first game against Lake Nash Young Guns at Legend Oval.
And they were hard to miss on the field.
Taking their cue from the Panthers cricket team, the team lined out in pink and white hooped guernseys.
Unfortunately the new team were not able to walk away with a win.
Beginners luck did not prevail and the Lake Nash Young Guns gave them a royal thumping 18.6.114 to the Rhino’s 6.9.45.
Nathan Bowd made the history books as the first player in the club to score a goal.
Club president Michael Pritchard managed two goals of his own and Alister Orton and J Coughlan each scored one of their own.
Best on field was shared between Alister Orton, Toby Schmidt and Tom Rigmany.
“Plenty to be happy about for a first hit out together and it also identified where we can best improve. The first game of footy ever for the majority of the team, but some very silky passages of play,” the club wrote on their Facebook page.
“Thanks to Lake Nash for a good hard game of footy and congratulations on a well earned win.”
The Dajarra Rhinos join current teams Buffs, Lake Nash, Tigers and Rovers to make up the five-team competition.
Club president Michael Pritchard said name for the new club stemmed from a good friendship with the publican at the Dajarra Hotel.
“Her name is Shelly Ryan and her husband is known as ‘Rhino’ because of their name, so it came from there,” Pritchard said.
Pritchard said the nucleus of the new club was a bunch of good mates who over the last couple of years had played cricket together in Mount Isa for Panthers – newly crowned Mount Isa T40 cricket champions – and also played for various AFL clubs in town.
“We’ve also recruited a few new fellas in town we work with who were looking to get involved in an AFl club,” he said.
“We’re training twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, at Captain Cook Oval at the moment.”
