The program was held to educate service providers about the increase of the potential impacts on water and the environment and to develop and identify monitoring and management practices to support regulation and to improve reporting of data and community understanding.
The promise of ongoing consultation was undertaken as part of the user panel process and consultation with government officials, industry and key community groups will continue.
The Isa Superbasin is the second region to be assessed as a potential source of gas by the Turnbull Government – the Cooper Basin in Queensland and South Australia having already been selected with the third being the Beetaloo Sub-basin, which lies southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory.
The Isa Superbasin covers parts of Northern Queensland, extending east from the Northern Territory border.
Mount Isa City Council had welcomed a major Geoscience Australia and CSIRO study which kicked off early this year to assess gas reserves in the ‘Isa Superbasin’.
As part of the $86.6 million “Towards a new energy future” package, the Australian Government committed $30.4 million to the Geological and Bioregional Assessments Program which was announced in the 2017-18 budget.
Another meeting will be held in a few months in the Burke Shire.
