AND just like that the countdown is on until some of the biggest events in the region are underway for another year – less than 30 days to the Mount Isa Show, less than 50 days to Birdsville Big Red Bash, and less than 80 days until the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, and then there are many great events in between. Mount Isa District Police are well underway for event planning to ensure everyone enjoys these events. We also ask the local Community, our neighbours and those visiting the region ensure their planning is underway to guarantee a safe and enjoyable time is had by all.

Here are some of the things we ask to keep in mind at this busy time of year:
Travelling: Prior to setting off on your journey, it is vital consideration is given to the roadworthiness of your vehicle. Ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy and appropriately fitted out for the terrain expected to be encountered is imperative. Planning your trip is worth spending that extra time on, making sure you are breaking up long drives with sufficient rest stops to avoid driver fatigue. Please check your vehicle registration and driver’s licence is current.
Property security: Holiday mode isn’t the case for everyone; opportunistic thieves will target at any time. Please ensure you remember to remove all valuables from your vehicles, including loose change. And of course – remember to lock your vehicle at all times. If camping or caravanning, please make sure you pack up your camp and secure any items overnight.
An empty house is a prime target for intruders because there is less chance of being disturbed and the offence can go undetected for days or even weeks. If you are going away for an extended period of time, police advise you have someone house sit. However, a few simple precautions can reduce the risks:
- Check all doors and windows are securely locked
- Ask you neighbours to watch for visitors, but not to tell visitors you are away
- Arrange for someone to collect mail, mow lawns and water plants
- Cancel all deliveries
- Secure your garbage bin
For a more extensive list of holiday precautions, please visit www.police.qld.gov.au – home security. Regardless of where you are travelling in Queensland, the numbers for police reporting or attendance remain the same; If it is happening now, phone 000. Otherwise, phone Policelink on 131 444.
