Memories of judo in Mount Isa
I was in Mount Isa from 1977 to 1983 as the Queensland Inspector of Mines.

I was also the Treasurer of the Mount Isa Judo Club at Wellington Oval from about 1978 to 1983.
At that time there were two Judo Clubs in Mount Isa.
I am cleaning out old documents and found this newspaper cutting from the NW Queensland Advertiser which, was a free newspaper, circulated in opposition to the Star.
The cutting is dated 26 June 1979.
It took weekly Saturday mornings in front of K Mart or the TAB, or the hardware store in Miles Street to sell raffle tickets in order to build an extension to the original dojo.
The floor of the extension was covered with conveyor belting cut to length with a hand knife lubricated with soapy water, in the Mary Kathleen salvage yard in 40 degree heat.
When I left, the Club had no debts and were able to pay much of the cost to send judokas to competitions.
Looking at the website today it seems that maybe this sport has died in Mount Isa and like the documents I am throwing out, it has become redundant.

Youth justice system lurches from crisis to crisis under Labor
Our youth justice system continues to be in crisis under Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor.
Youth crime is on the rise, youth detention centres are overcrowded and Labor’s band aid solutions just aren’t working.
We have repeat offenders who continually snub their nose at the police and the courts.
Children are being kept in police watch houses for up to 11 days.
On top of all this, Labor has bungled their own reform to transfer 17 year old offenders from adult prisons to youth detention. The system is a complete mess.
A recent Question on Notice asked by LNP Leader Deb Frecklington confirmed that almost $5 million has been wasted on establishing four youth bail houses.
These are located in Carbook, Logan and two in Townsville, with more set to be rolled out across Queensland.
Labor’s youth bail houses will threaten community safety and won’t help rehabilitate or train young offenders.
What we need is a comprehensive plan to get the lives of these at risk young offenders back on track before they become hardened adult crims.
Labor’s continuing mismanagement of the youth justice system threatens not just community safety – but the opportunity to turn around the lives of young offenders.
