It was a big working Saturday in the Isa – a fact that unfortunately meant I could not attend the Normanton Rodeo this year, an event I had a lot of fun at last year.

I started the day with a parkrun, the wonderful new initiative that gets people out of bed early and out at 7am to join many others for a 5km run, jog or walk. It’s a great occasion for families or for walking the dog and there is always a friendly atmosphere around.
I’m trying to beat my PB of 25 minutes for 5km and if I could just avoid tripping over on one of the cracks on the pavement at Tharrapatha Way, I’m sure I can do it.
Though I just missed out again, it was a great way to start the weekend.
Then it was off to the Civic Centre lawn to join more dog owners for Mount Isa City Council’s Pet Day. The day has a serious message about responsible pet ownership but really it was all about cooing over the many blobs of fur that turned the lawn into a festival of cute and cuddly.
This year Mount Isa City Council added a pets fashion parade to the festivities and it was great to see dogs – and their proud owners – dolled up for the occasion.
It was a lot of fun and I expect to become a permanent part of the calendar. Well done to Council on a great morning.
Later it was an afternoon of what Roy and HG would say that “too much sport is barely enough”.
I watched a bit of the Parkside v Isaroos football (soccer) match as the sides sought inspiration from the upcoming World Cup (some late nights/early mornings ahead for us football tragics).
Then on to Legend Oval for my first glimpse of the new AFL side the Dajarra Rhinos resplendent in their Panthers-themed pink and white outfits. The newcomers played manfully but were overcome by premiers Buffs.
Finally onto Buchanan Park for a big day at the races with well over a thousand people present.
There was drama in the big race with two false starts and the favourite pulling out before Anymore won a thrilling finish.
I ended the day with a lovely Night With the Polynesian People at the Civic Centre. Great food, great dancing and proof of Isa’s great multicultural attraction – Derek Barry
