It’s that time of year in North West Queensland where there is something big on every weekend.

Last weekend it was the Cloncurry Show – and it was a great agricultural show as usual.
For two days the town and its wonderful Recreation Grounds scrubbed up a treat with the Cattleman’s Dinner the perfect warm up act on the Thursday night.
There was another excellent set of cattle on display and as is often the case in recent years Peter and Ann Woollett up at Nardoo walked away with multiple class winners – three out of six to be exact.
They are obviously doing something right up there in the Gulf country.
My fellow journalist Lydia Lynch enjoyed a thrill-seeking ride in one of the Isuzu Team D-MAX stunt show cars, an experience so heart-stopping she is now away on a three week overseas holiday to recover from it.
Meanwhile the kids in the Ukulele Group offered less stressful – and far more cute – musical entertainment in the pavilion while the equestrian action was often fast and furious, but always graceful, in the main ring.
A credit to all involved in bringing a great show to the public and congratulations to Cloncurry’s newest Showgirl Mikaela Tapp who beat off strong challenges from two other talented young ladies.
The action now moves to Buchanan Park for the Mount Isa Show for what should be another action-packed weekend.
There will be a mix of old favourites and new events such as the Strongman Challenge with categories such as truck pull, bus pull and keg toss.
Another fun item added this year is the Hay Stack Challenge.
The object of the Hay Stack Challenge, is for teams of three competitors, to stack 15 bales of hay as quickly as possible. The final will be held at 5.30pm Saturday in the main arena ahead of the PBR.
I expect the campoven demostration to be popular and mouthwatering.
They will be continually cooking throughout the day for people to come up and have a chat at how to cook a brilliant meal on the open fire.
So do yourself and Mount Isa a favour and support your local Show this Friday and Saturday – Derek Barry
