A Main Roads spokesperson said these works under the Queensland government’s Safer Roads Sooner program improved safety at high-risk crash sites.
“This intersection is extremely busy and these works will significantly improve the safety for all road users, including pedestrians,” the spokesperson said.
“Push buttons at the signals and designated footpaths will improve safety for pedestrians.”
The speed limit on the highway near the junction has been reduced from 80 to 70kph.
The Department said they were improving the safety of more than 20 intersections in Mount Isa and expect works to be completed by 2020.
Future works include the provision of right-turn lanes for most intersections along Grace / Marian Streets, with construction to start in late 2018.
