Naidoc Week 2018 celebrates the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are making to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.
It will be held in Mount Isa from July 8-15 (and then the following week in Cloncurry) and preparations are well underway towards a full week of events and activities.
This year’s theme ““Because of her, we can!”” recognises the role women have played as pillars of our society.
According to the official national Naidoc Week organisation Indigenous women’s role in our cultural, social and political survival has often been invisible, unsung or diminished.
Yet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have always fought for justice, equal rights, rights to country, law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate culture, language, music and art.
They have marched, protested and spoken at demonstrations and national gatherings for the proper recognition of Indigenous rights and calling for national reform and justice and often did so while caring for families and maintaining homes.
“Our women did so because they demanded a better life, greater opportunities and - in many cases equal rights - for our children, our families and our people,” Naidoc Week organisers said.
“Their achievements, their voice, their unwavering passion give us strength and have empowered past generations and paved the way for generations to come.”
This is a great theme to celebrate and the North West Star looks forward to sharing the stories of inspirational Indigenous women in the coming days.
Events kick off in Mount Isa with a flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Centre lawns at 10am Sunday, July 8.
There is also a flag raising ceremony a day later outside Mount Isa police station at 10am Monday.
Also on that day are a Naidoc family fun day at Minnie Davis Park 10am to noon and the day finishes with a fun cultural trivia night at the Overlander from 6pm.
