Organisers said the attendance was bigger than last year.
“In fact we think this is the biggest crowd of marchers we have ever had.”
The march started at the Outback at Isa at 9.30am after the Annual NAIDOC breakfast which was held in the Kalkadoon Keeping Place on Marion Street.
The Street March followed the route from previous years, as police controlled the traffic, they passed McDonald’s and headed through the roundabout to Rodeo Drive.
The walkers turned left after they marched into West Street and then turned into Isa Street to walk across the bridge and into the Skate Park
The marchers were welcomed with warm cheers and clapping hands as they entered the Park.
The MOB FM Family Fun Day kept everyone entertained with the dazzling vocals of Viv Edwards and the fun-loving Trish Mcnamara as the MC for the day.
The fun kicked off at 10 am with a performers from the Indigenous dancers called The Sundowners.
Art and craft stalls entertained the youth with painting and other craft ideas.
The theme for NAIDOC is ‘Because of her we can’.
The talented Kerry Major from NWRH.wrote this poem while she waited for the marchers to arrive.
BECAUSE OF HER WE CAN
Our Mothers, our Grandmothers
And women from time
Our Daughters, our Sisters
And those left behind.
We have lived a journey
Through heartache and pain
She has pushed us forward,
Again and again.
Because Of Her We Can
Do many things
We can take many steps forward
We can dance, laugh and sing.
She has given us joy
She has given us life
She is a Mother, a Sister
A Daughter and a Wife.
Because Of Her We Can
Now have hope
Because of her
We have learnt to cope.
Because of her
We stand here today
Let us recognise her journey
And acknowledge her pain.
Because of her
we can always be loved
Because of her
we can do so much.
She has been our first teacher
Our doctor and best friend
Because of her
We will always belong.
