Over the past three weeks, Mount Isa Village shoppers have been voting for the most deserving community hero.
Mr Derrick volunteers as a boxing teacher and mentor at the PCYC.
Dedicating his weeknights to teaching classes, Mr Derrick and his wife also volunteer their weekends to drive boxers to events in Alice Springs and along the coast.
“So many people in Mount Isa are doing great things for the community, so it feels really good to be recognised,” Mr Derrick said.
“Thank you to Nikki Row for nominating me, Lorraine Champion for supporting boxing and to my wife and kids for all their support.”
Mr Derrick has won a $1000 Accor Hotels voucher to take a much-needed holiday as thanks for all he does for others.
As finalists, Narelle Eaton and Gary Osman will also get their chance to take a break, receiving $200 and $100 Accor vouchers respectively.
Mount Isa Village’s Marketing Manager Natalia Palacio said the centre was delighted to give back to the people who do so much for their community and do not expect anything in return.
“We want to reward those people who are making a positive difference through their contributions to local sporting clubs, schools, charities and non-profit organisations,” Ms Palacio said.
“It’s people like James Derrick, Narelle Eaton and Gary Osman who make up the heart of the community, dedicating their time to make it a better place.
“These individuals put in incredible amounts of time and effort into helping their community groups, always going above and beyond,” she said.
“We are extremely proud of James’s commitment to PCYC and he is extremely deserving of a well-earned, relaxing break.”
