Committee Member for the Quamby Rodeo Allan Abdy said the tiny settlement of Quamby is around 60km North of Cloncurry on the Normanton Rd.
“Right near the old Quamby pub that is derelict now.”
The bush rodeo was the idea of families living in the Quamby region way back in 1997.
“It’s pretty much a bush rodeo – the same as what’s been happening in Australia forever and a day.
“We started with nothing so we built the rodeo grounds and now we have all the local lads and girls come and have a go riding a bull, horse or cow,” Mr Abdy said.
Quamby Rodeo can attract up to 2500 visitors for the weekend and is a favourite spot for camping with live entertainment well into Saturday night.
“Roping opens the Rodeo on Friday night and events run all day Saturday.
“There’s bull riding, calf and potty riding, steer wrestling, donkey ride – which is always popular, there’s a gymkana for the kids and barrel racing, station buck jump.
“In the station buck jump the competitors don't use a traditional bronc saddle, they use their work saddle,” he said.
Full bar and food stalls are available at the Rodeo and there’s plenty of space for camping.
“There’s showers and toilet amenities however there’s no power.”
Mr Abdy warned travellers and locals that baits were laid for wild dogs around the area.
“You would be better not to bring your dog but if you’re travelling with one then keep an eye on it or keep them tied up.
Mr Abdy said they ask that campers stay away until Friday afternoon about 3pm so the committee have plenty of room to set up.”
It’s the perfect lead in to the two big rodeos in the following weeks – Cloncurry Merry Muster (August 4-5) and the 60th anniversary Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo (August 10-13).
