This year’s celebration shone a light on the women in our Indigenous communities who have been mentors and role models.
Hundreds of Cloncurry community members united on Mitakoodi country on Friday to take part in the annual NAIDOC Week march.
The march was followed by live entertainment at Cloncurry State School grounds. Because of Her We Can was the theme of NAIDOC 2018, and throughout the week it resonated at community events across the shire
Everyone, regardless of their culture, has a woman they look up to. In the Aboriginal community, there is a particular respect for their women, many of whom, through their struggles, have imbued the current and future generations with a sense of strength and resilience.
Cloncurry NAIDOC treasurer said it had been a fantastic week of celebrations.
“We have a lot of influential women in our community, so the theme this year was really fitting” Ms Turrell said.
“I think it is important we celebrate NAIDOC week, to recognise the impact Indigenous people have and to remind the community of our culture and traditions.”
Students from both Cloncurry State School and St Joseph’s were there to show their support.
