Mt Isa Caravan Park Manager Julie Simmons said we have pamphlets sitting on the desk and a few flyers we give out to make travellers aware.
“When you’re on holidays you get complacent and with so many tourists coming through complacency could mean you’re asking for trouble,” Ms Simmons said.
“So we pre-warn everybody to lock up both caravan and car and to be vigilant.
“Don’t leave things in your annex area,” she said.
The most common crimes to be aware of involve theft of property, including cash and valuables, from unlocked vehicles and caravans.
Ms Simmons said don’t carry too much money with you.
“And especially don’t leave cash, bags or wallets visible in your vehicle.”
A police spokesperson said caravan parks are targeted by property offenders.
“Thieves are aware of the easy likelihood of finding unsecured vehicles, unlocked caravans and easy access to valuables, including large amounts of cash,” said the spokesperson.
TOURIST SEASON TIPS
- Make a firm habit of locking your vehicle every time you leave direct sight of the doors, no matter how far away you are, even at a motel or caravan park.
- Beware of carrying large amounts of cash, consider your security measures for storing cash, and how much cash you really need to store during your trip.
- Consider installing portable security features such as sensor lighting.
- Use a personal alarm to alert you to an intruder.
