There is electricity in the Mount Isa air as excitement builds for the most anticipated events of the year.

Bucking off with the Isa Street Party yesterday, today – Thursday, August 9 – marks the beginning of the four-day Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo’s Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary Rodeo.

2018 marks the 60th time Mount Isa has hosted the rodeo, despite the iconic event being 59 years old.

Isa Rodeo general manager Natalie Flecker said the special anniversary relates back to the rodeo’s early history.

“We held two rodeos in 1970, the second one especially for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when they visited Mount Isa, and this is why we are celebrating the milestone of 60 rodeos in 2018, instead of 2019,” she said.

With a stellar line up of non-stop entertainment, this year’s event is not one to miss out on.

If you’ve always wanted to experience for the first time, an authentic Outback rodeo, the biggest and best in the southern hemisphere, then 2018 will be one to remember,” she said. “Mount Isa is Australia’s rodeo capital and our visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome and taste of outback hospitality.”

Don’t miss a minute of the action in the red dirt Buchanan arena which will host rodeo competitions and the finals on Sunday, as well as a live concert on Sunday night.

Visitors and residents are also encouraged to view the Isa Rodeo Hall of Fame which will be officially opened tonight. Historical memorabilia and interactive displays will be on show at the Outback at Isa as a permanent celebration and preservation of the rodeo’s long-standing history.

There will also be plenty of family fun including rodeo bubs, bush poets breakfast, kids entertainment and market stalls.
