The official day will be held on Sunday September 16, and will take place in the form of a public clean up registration point and fun day, run by Mount Isa City Council and Smoking Gun Café at Mount Isa Plaza in Pioneer.
Councillor Paul Stretton, environmental management portfolio said the Pioneer event had been well supported in the past few years and a variety of local businesses had come on board to offer support and services.
“Although Council invests a significant amount of resources into environmental management each year, we enjoy being able to encourage the community to work alongside us on this particular day,” Cr Stretton said.
“It’s great to see the amount of kids and their parents who get involved as a learning exercise, and we are pleased to offer a bit of fun at the end of the hard work by offering a free sausage sizzle and having the Pioneer Plaza help us out with a fun day.”
For anyone that would like to be involved, there are a number of options.
You are welcome to come to the Great Northern Clean Up Fun Day from 7am on Sunday September 16 at Pioneer Mount Isa Plaza and we will have clean up kits for you and recommended areas to begin your clean up.
Or if you would like to nominate your own site, please visit https://www.cleanup.org.au/register-an- event, and you can order clean up kits at the same time, and it will give you the information you need for accessing the tip for free to dispose of you rubbish.
Local resident Nuff Richardson is hoping to gather support to clean up Lake Moondarra again this year.
“The clean up at the Lake is on Saturday September 8 in the morning,” Mr Richardson said.
“We once again have the support from our local BCF and Coles have come on board this year donating supplies needed for the day.”
“This year’s focus will target a smaller area than last year – the bay areas to the North West side of the pump station,” Mr Richardson said.
Entrance to the area is from the dirt road near George Fisher Mine off the Barkly Highway.
“Anyone willing to lend a hand is welcome and it will be greatly appreciated.”
“Please bring a hat, long sleeved shirt, sunscreen, gloves and a camp chair to have a rest while the snag cook,” he said.
